Christmas Holidays: 5 Ways To Make This Holiday Your Best Ever
|
For many people the end of a year is a time of increased stress.
Instead of relaxing and unwinding from a busy year, the pressures of buyinggifts, travelling or spending time with long lost relatives makes it adifficult time.
In our household for example, my 4 year-old daughter's excitement levelshave been taken to new highs by performing in front of 800 people as a'teddy bear' in her first ever ballet concert.
Loaded on top of this was her Kindergarten show, this time performing therole of an 'angel' in a Nativity Play, and counting down the days to ourfour-week trip to Tasmania.
Just yesterday, she woke at 5.15 am and started packing her bags to go. Ismiled when she told me she had packed 8 videos for the trip!
Now I'm really looking forward to our holiday and spending time at FreycinetLodge on the Island's east-coast, feeling the crunch of pristine white sandunder my feet at Wineglass Bay, watching the sun set over the pink graniteoutcrops of 'The Hazards' and tasting the fresh salty tang oflocally grown pacific oysters.
But it won't be easy getting ready, packing and then travelling for 12 hourswith full luggage and 2 children under 5 years old.
Add to this the fact we're staying with relatives. So what is the solution?
Here are my Top 5 Ways to make End of Year Holidays a relaxing and stressfree time.
1. CLARIFY AND SHARE EXPECTATIONS.
Be aware of the extra pressure on families at this time of the year. Clarifywith family members what each individual wants from the break. For me, itmay be reading all those business books I didn't get time for during theyear. I know for my wife, it is getting extra help looking after thechildren and spending time together as a family. How can both these needs bemet? Use these three questions to clarify the needs and wants of others atthis busy time. What do you want? What do you dread? What will put a smileon your face?
2. PLAN, MONITOR AND BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR BUDGET.
Money issues can be a big source of conflict at the end of the year. It ismeant to be a time for gift giving and sharing but it can get out of hand.Set a budget for gifts, entertainment and food. Stick to the budget andmonitor it regularly so you don't overspend.
3. DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITY AND SHARE TASKS.
You can't do everything all of the time. Many people strive for perfectionat the end of the year because of the many positive and festive imagesportrayed by the media. Be realistic and work out what you can and can'tachieve. Ask for and get help. Be prepared to give up some control to sharethe load.
4. COMMUNICATE YOUR FEELINGS.
The end of the year, and in Western cultures Christmas, is an emotionaltime. Share your feelings of joy with others. If you're feeling stressed, let others know how you feel and ask for support.
5. KEEP UP YOUR REGULAR ROUTINE.
Keep doing the things you have enjoyed doing during the year, like exerciseand eating well. Take time out for yourself and your family.

The Five Best Cigar-related Fathers Day Gifts
According to a recent study by the internet cigar retailer WhatsKnotToLove.com, Father's Day -- that shameless day of the year when wives, daughters and sons have to publicly humiliate themselves in a quest for a gift they know will go unappreciated -- has become a national epidemic. More than sixty million American Fathers are affected by a disappointing Father's Day, and it is estimated that half of those try to conceal the fact with crooked smiles and unintelligible mumbles that invoke the Need a Moment? Twix Bar commercial. Fortunately, the disease rarely causes permanent disability -- if the s...(related: Holidays)
Celebrate Your Freedom: 6 Important Freedoms To Celebrate Everyday

Since Sept. 11 our sense of freedom has been challenged like never before. It seems appropriate at this time of year to discuss the many freedoms we have.As your own personal declaration of independence, here are three things to declare freedom from and three things to declare freedom to seek.*Freedom from too much s...(related: Holidays)
Fireworks--or, Ooh, Aah, How Do They Do That?
One of my earliest memories involves a Fourth of July spent at Annandale, Minnesota, sitting on a hill and watching fireworks. Our family had a cabin on Cedar Lake, a mile and a half away, and we had come to the display with a recently emptied ice cream tub filled with popcorn and a thermos of raspberry Kool-Aid. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first time I ever was allowed to stay up beyond my 8:00 bedtime.Like all kids and many adults, I sat stock still with my mouth open the entire time. I had never seen anything like it. Red, yellow and green flowers in the sky and loud explosions that had me reaching for my mother's hand. And at the end came the hissing, spitting and smoky American flag in red, white and blue.Wow! H...(related: Holidays)
Giving Thanks
Can you believe that Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away? What does Thanksgiving mean to you? For many of us it means turkey, dressing, pies and all the other goodies that go along with it. It also means family. But what else does it mean? There is a child's prayer that I used to say when I was little that goes:Thank you for the world so sweet,Thank you for the food we eat,Than...(related: Holidays)

Marching Towards Mothers Day
"Mother: the most beautiful word on the lips of mankind." -Kahil GibranThis coming Sunday is our "big day," moms. It's the one day a year when we get officially honored for what it is that we do. I don't know about you, but I usually find myself reflecting on exactly what my role is, anyway. Motherhood has evolved over the past two generations into a job which, many would argue, looks far different than the job our own mothers knew. And given the unfortunate-and oftentimes divisive-dichotomy between "working mom" and "stay-at-home mom" with which many categorize themselves, the job description sometimes gets fuzzier, rather than clearer. Does extensive volunteer work place you under the "working" or "stay-at-home" group? Does a part-time position at your kids' school o...(related: Holidays)

Valentines Day
Ever wondered how February 14 became, the day on which we celebrate and explore love in all its many ideals, Valentines Day.There are many differing opinions on how Valentines Day started. One story say that when the Roman Empire reigned, a festival every February was held in honour of the God of Fertility and during this time, young men would choose their mate. When a Emperor named Claudius can around, he outlawed all marriages in fear that the men would not be able to fight. Young couples still fell in love though and still wished to marry and they took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine who, understan...(related: Holidays)
